Climate and Ecological Emergency Alliance calls for backing of Parliament climate change bill
A banner drop took place at a Newark church on Friday as part of a nationwide action on climate and ecology change.
The Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Alliance is calling on Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary, the Newark MP, Robert Jenrick, to back the CEE Bill.
The banner drop took place at the London Road Congregational Church in the centre of town.
Carl Braithwaite, a resident who supports the bill, said: “We need stronger environmental action.
“Newark is in the Trent Valley and many areas particularly those where recent building has taken place are vulnerable to flooding.
“Extreme weather events are already far more frequent than when I grew up in the town and we know that with climate change the risk of these events increases each year.
“At the same time we face a crisis in the natural world.
“A recent report by the WWF found that animal populations declined by 68% since 1970. The two crisis are interconnected and we need an integrated plan to tackle the climate and ecological challenges we face and the CEE Bill does just that.”
Friday marked the day the bill was due to be debated in parliament before being postponed because of the pandemic. It is awaiting a new slot.
