A homeschooled ten-year-old from Fernwood wrote a book about climate change and with the help of Positively Empowered Kids CIC created a Just Giving page to fundraise to publish the book

A ten-year-old is hoping to publish a children’s book she has written that focuses on climate change.

Georgia Chester, of Fernwood, is looking for funding for her dyslexia-friendly book.

A JustGiving page has been created with a target of £500 to cover the book illustrations and publication.

TEN-YEAR-OLD Georgia Chester has written a book called The Dragolf, which raises awareness of climate change, and is now looking for help to get it published.
TEN-YEAR-OLD Georgia Chester has written a book called The Dragolf, which raises awareness of climate change, and is now looking for help to get it published.

The Dragolf focuses on empowerment, positivity, friendships and climate change. The four main characters represent each of the elements — fire, water, air and earth.

The story follows each of the characters on a seven-day quest because God made the earth in seven days.

Each task involves collecting a key to portals taking the character into a parallel world that will lead to stopping climate change.

The youngster, who is home-schooled, said she knew she wanted to write a book from the age of six.

With the help of her home tutor, Debs, she has achieved her goal.

Georgia said: “Being dyslexic myself helped because I have a bit more of a creative mind.

“It doesn’t feel very real that I wrote a book. It took me a year and a half to finish it but now it is complete.”

The book has six chapters and will be illustration-led as Georgia herself struggles to read books lacking visuals because of dyslexia.

She wanted to make sure that people with dyslexia would be able to read and enjoy her book.

Her mum, Annette Chester, who made the decision to have Georgia and her brother home-schooled after covid, admits to being very proud of Georgia.

“It is amazing. Georgia is passionate about the environment.

“She is really interested in marine life and being home-educated allows her to explore all those things without getting caught up with the national curriculum.

“She can focus in what interests her and takes her in the direction that she wants.”

Family friend Claire Clements, co-founder and director of Positively Empowered Kids, is helping Georgia reach her goal.

She said: “Georgia has done all the hard work and I absolutely love seeing children reach their dreams and being able to help is part of why I love doing my job.

“We aim to empower children when they find something they love, we recognised the strengths of Georgia’s book and we wanted to support her.”

Georgia’s tutor hosted a reading session to present the book to some family and friends in her backyard.

“All of the adults were super impressed with the language, the way she formulated the story and took it through from the beginning to the end, it is beyond anything I’d be able to do,” added Annette.

Georgia aspires to be a marine zoologist in the future.
