A blood testing clinic in memory of Joel Picker-Spencer is due to be held in Newark today. (Thursday)

Joel of The Meadows, Farndon, died in November last year after a four year battle against leukaemia.

Today would have been his eighth birthday.

Two sessions will be held, from 1.45pm-4pm and 4.30pm-7pm, at the clinic at Christ Church Hall on Boundary Road, where people can also donate blood.

It has been organised by the NHS Blood and Transplant Service in a bid to get more people to join the bone marrow donor register.

Joel’s mother, Mrs Ann-Marie Spence, will be there to hand out leaflets to people.

She said: "They were planning to organise one in Newark and it fell on Joel’s birthday. It’s a way to remember him. It will be the last one of this year."

The family plan to celebrate Joel’s birthday by releasing balloons in his memory at home tonight.

Joel was diagnosed with leukaemia on New Year’s Day 2005.

He had been in remission and was due to have a bone marrow transplant in September, but the cancer returned and he became too ill for the operation.
