‘Cod’ it be second time lucky for Angell’s Fisheries, Newark in National Fish & Chip Awards?
One of the longest-serving fish and chip shops in Newark has been named among the top takeaways in the country for the second year in a row.
The shortlist for the UK’s best fish and chip shops has been announced, and the 40 finalists are ready to ‘batter’ it out to gain the acclaimed Takeaway of the Year title in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025.
Angell Fisheries, located on Barnby Gate, is the only finalist in the Nottinghamshire region, and co-owner Sophie Angell said the team were “so proud” to be shortlisted for the second year running, after they reached the top 20 finalists in 2023.
She said: “We’re all thrilled, there are lots of chip shops and takeaways in Newark and we’re really proud to be the only one in the awards.
“We got through to the last 20 last year and we really hope to progress further this year.”
The fish and chip shop has now been operating in Newark since the early 1900s, and Sophie and her husband Steven took on the business in 2021, giving the establishment a renovation in 2022, relaunching it as their own.
The finalists were selected after a panel of fish and chip experts rated the businesses on their industry awareness, product knowledge, environmental and sustainability best practice, employer responsibilities, customer service, and more.
The 40 shortlisted businesses will soon be reduced to 20, and then the final 10 shortlisted chippies will be invited to attend The National Fish and Chip Awards on February 26, 2025, at the Park Plaza Hotel, on Westminster Bridge, London.
Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the awards provide an ‘oppor-tuna-ty’ for fish and chip outlets across the UK to show the industry exactly what they are made of.
President of the NFFF, Andrew Crook, said the category has seen many fantastic submissions:
“Fish and chips is such an iconic British staple and it takes huge amounts of skill and hard work to not only perfect the dish and other menu offerings but to also overcome challenges and sustain the business while keeping employees motivated and fulfilled.
“There’s a lot to it and each awards season we see greater depths of talent, expertise, and business acumen and this trend has continued this year, too.
“Takeaway of the Year is the big one, so it goes without saying that the journey it takes contenders on is very intense.
“At each stage learnings and recommendations are provided to encourage the hopefuls to keep pushing forward and that’s why the National Fish & Chip Awards is seen as the competition for chip shop owners that want the additional steer to become better than they were before.
“We’re off to a brilliant start and we’re excited for the next rounds and to honour these deserving people.”
