Newark resident raise concerns after news broke of Sainsbury’s taking over Newark’s Homebase store on Northgate
Newark residents have raise concerns after news broke that Sainsbury’s would be taking over Newark’s Homebase store.
Under plans by Sainsbury’s, which would see 10 Homebase stores nationally converted into supermarkets, including the store on Northgate, many residents have expressed concerns about the plans.
The story, published by The Advertiser on Thursday, has attracted over 200 comments.
Some reacted positively to the news and were delighted to discover that a larger Sainsbury’s store would be coming to Newark, but many had their concerns
A recurring theme revolved around traffic issues on the notoriously difficult turnings around the retail parks on Northgate and how a potential influx of vehicles could worsen the situation.
Johanna Whitmarsh, wrote: “I love Sainsbury's so I'm happy, but I do think the traffic will be a nightmare so they need to review the current set up.”
Laura-Jo Webster added: “Definitely need traffic systems already on Northgate, I find it really hard to turn right out of Aldi and M&S and now a third. Has that been considered?”
There was also the issue of safety in the area, with Donna Brooke writing: “Is there anyway we can object to this?
“As a resident in the area it’s already a nightmare with traffic and so dangerous as a pedestrian, not to mention the foot path is dangerous with cyclist and electric scooter riders who think they own the whole pavement even where there’s no cycle lanes.”
Tricia Fairfax agreed with the traffic problem but also questioned the current parking situation.
She said: “Going to be a bloody nightmare trying to get out of that junction especially with traffic already blocking the access to the business units round the back of Homebase.
“Plus they will have to address parking as there are not enough spaces in the existing car park for a large supermarket.”
Sandra Allen added: “All these shops are useless to those who don’t drive. Needs a bus specific to the retail park.”
Some suggested that brownfield sites around Newark would be better suited to a new supermarket such as undeveloped land at the Fernwood Business Park, which would help serve new housing developments and reduce congestion in the town centre.
Newark and Sherwood District Council confirmed that as the takeover is not classed as a change of use for the property, no planning application is needed.
There was also sadness from loyal Homebase customers that the store would be closing.
