Newark man claims Costcutter is flying in the face of government advice by enforcing minimum spends on cards
A frustrated resident claims some shops are flying in the face of government advice by enforcing minimum spends on cards.
Robert Cain, of Newark, who visited Costcutter on Hawton Road, said he was shocked to see cash encouraged, despite the potential spread of the coronavirus.
Robert had queued to get into the store only to be turned away when he was faced with a £5 minimum spend.
He said: “I just popped in to buy some milk and when I went to pay with my contactless debit card I was told there was £5 minimum for cards.
“I said ‘surely not for debit cards’ and the lady said ‘all cards’.
“You are supposed to be encouraging safe practice and are discouraging people from using cards.
“I did not have any cash with me as I am trying to avoid it, as per government guidelines.
“I left, having wasted my time queueing up.”
A spokesman for Costcutter said the supermarket chain supported independent retailers and some shops had different polices.
