Conversion plan for former Newark takeaway
A listed building could be turned into apartments.
Plans have been submitted to convert the empty former takeaway at 6-8 Portland Street, Newark, into two apartments.
The Grade II-listed building dates back to around 1790 and was altered in the late 19th Century and mid-20th Century.
It was home to the Wok Inn Chinese Takeaway and was raided by police and immigration officers in 2006 looking for people who were in the country illegally.
The building, which is in the Newark Conservation Area, was originally three houses.
Since the takeaway closed in the early 2010s, the front of the building has deteriorated.
Under plans submitted to Newark and Sherwood District Council, the internal layout of the flat on the first floor would be changed to suit modern living standards, and a second apartment would be created on the ground floor.
A courtyard at the back would be shared by both apartments and used for bin and cycle storage.
According to the planning application, the exterior would remain unchanged and be brought back to its former glory.
It said there were various examples of townhouse cottages and recent conversions in Millgate and Newark town centre, the most recent being the change of use of 15-19 Portland Street.
The application said the proposal would not adversely affect the conservation area or the characteristics of the listed structure, but would enhance them.
Applications have been submitted for planning permission and for listed building consent.
The district council will decide if the project can go ahead.
