Johno Lee, Newark and Sherwood District Councillor for Baldeton North and Coddinton, and Nottinghamshire County Councillor for Balderton, confirmed as Conservative Party candidate for Nottingham East in 2024 UK general election

A councillor has been confirmed as a parliamentary candidate in the UK general election, which is due to take place later this year.

Johno Lee, a well-known Newark and Sherwood District Councillor and Nottinghamshire County Councillor, has been confirmed as the Conservative Party’s candidate in the Nottingham East seat.

The MP post is currently held by Labour’s Nadia Whittome, and encompasses an area to the north and east of Nottingham including the suburbs of Mapperley, Carrington and Sherwood, and the inner city areas of Hyson Green, St Ann's, Bakersfield and Sneinton.

Mr Lee has been a district councillor since 2015, representing the Balderton North and Coddington ward, and the county councillor for Balderton since 2021.

As a former soldier who lost a leg in a road-side bomb attack in Afghanistan, he has been a strong advocate for awareness and further support for individuals with disabilities and veterans.

In support of his candidacy, he said his work as a councillor had been marked by active engagement with community issues and a “clear, results-oriented approach” to problem-solving, which he would apply in government to ensure that residents felt heard and that “local needs are at the forefront of the political agenda.”

He added that he wanted to see accountable leadership prioritised and the delivery of services that meet the needs of the community.

Mr Lee previously ran as a Conservative parliamentary candidate in his home town of Bolton in 2010, coming second with 34% of the vote share.

This year’s general election is expected to be held in December and can take place no later than January 28, 2025.
