Newark Advertiser reader letters: Councillors have a duty to be model citizens

I fully support Councillor Rowan Cozens’ motion, passed by the full council on October 15 with a view to identifying practical measures Newark and Sherwood District Council should adopt to address poor conduct by its members.

This includes a request for clear and robust guidance around member behaviour on social media.

Councillors are seen as leaders of their local community and should act as role models.

The majority are striving in good faith to exemplify high levels of discourse and respect debate.

The behaviours of the few that are not, is totally unacceptable and they should be called out by their political party and the residents they represent.

The narrative of local politics should be to support and improve the ‘environment’ for the residents that they represent, not to embarrass or belittle fellow colleagues and citizens. — Jane Buxton, Balderton parish councillor
