Labour councillors at Newark town council are proposing free use of the public toilets
Labour councillors are proposing free public toilets in the town centre.
Councillor Paul Taylor has proposed that the town council start a public consultation to end the 20 pence charges for the use of public toilets.
The proposal would cost the town council approximately £5,000.
The option of installing a credit card payment system in public toilets would not bring any income to the council for at least two years due to the costs of installing the equipment.
It is thought that the prices of use of the public toilets with the card payment system would go up to £1.
Currently, public toilets are costing council taxpayers £100,000 per year.
It is proposed that the consultation should have an online form and that a number of face-to-face sessions be hosted in a Market stall.
Additionally, it was suggested that the Newark Advertiser run a poll on the website to maximise the public consultation.
This motion will be debated at the full town council meeting next Wednesday, September 13.
