County’s RAF ties are remembered
It was good to learn that the Red Arrows will remain in Lincolnshire — Bomber County — where some 29 airfields served during the second world war as Wellington and Lancaster aircraft bases, and not forgetting there was also a handful of Fighter Command RAF stations.
Of those 29 bomber bases, it does seem a shame that those at the Ministry of Defence in London do not realise or accept that RAF Scampton is possibly the most famous and historic of them all.
Formed in 1916, it was the base for a special squadron — No 617, the Dambusters — who destroyed the Ruhr Dams in the second world war — a special squadron for a special mission.
