Newark couple set up on a blind date years ago celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary
A couple set up on a date more than 70 years ago are still going strong together.
Ken and Joyce Jones, both 93, marked their 72nd wedding anniversary — and it is all thanks to a blind date.
Joyce has lived in Newark all her life and Ken, originally from Halifax, was in the Army stationed at Sconce Park in the town in 1945.
In September that year, the pair were set up on a blind date and really enjoyed each other’s company — so began to court.
But just a month later, Ken was sent aboard to Egypt with the Army to help with the fitting of vehicle engines.
Holding out for Joyce, Ken wrote to her every day apart from one when he was travelling, and was away for three years in total.
They were reunited in January 1948 and married in the March — and have been happy ever since.
They had two sons, Brian and Malcolm.
This year, the couple celebrated their son’s 70th birthday.
