Crime continues to fall
Crime in Bingham has dropped significantly compared with a year ago — but police say more could be done to drive the figures down further.
Between April and June, crime fell by 40% — from 137 reported incidents to 82.
But Bingham’s police chief Inspector Phil Hallam said the public still needed to listen to crime prevention advice.
He said Bingham was a low crime area but by taking more precautions, crime could be virtually non-existent.
“We reduced the levels of crime last year and have continued to do so this year but Bingham could be even safer if the public listened to the vast range of crime prevention advice available from the police and our partners,” said Inspector Hallam.
The number of incidents involving anti-social behaviour reduced as the police continued to target the Market Place and surrounding streets, particularly on Friday afternoons and weekends, as one of their neigbourhood priorities.
In Bingham West, there were three reported incidents of both theft and vehicle crime and 11 reported violent crimes.
A single vehicle crime was reported in Bingham East, which also saw a significant reduction in the number of thefts — a fall of 51%.
However, Inspector Hallam stressed some of the offences that occurred could have been prevented if their advice had been heeded.
“People need to take on board what we say and lock their doors and windows and not leave valuables in their cars,” he said.
“We are accountable for the crimes that happen in the area but people have got to start taking some responsibility and listen to what we have to say.”
In the same three months, Cotgrave has seen the same level of reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour.
