Newark Market Place sees crowds for Armed Forces Day
Crowds gathered in Newark Market Place on Sunday to watch a military parade to mark Armed Forces Day.
The market was also full of stalls and activities to mark the day, which celebrates the past and present service of men and women in the forces.
The event started with a parade of former and current service personnel into the Market Place, where they were greeted by civic dignitaries, including the Mayor of Newark and the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Sir John Peace.
In a speech to the crowd, the Mayor of Newark Laurence Goff said: “Today is a day for showing the gratitude of Newark and the nation for the service of Her Majesty’s armed forces. Each of them has their own very proud history, and each of them has served to protect us against the most dangerous threats to this county’s existence.
“Our gratitude does not end when you each leave the branch you have chosen. Support exists beyond the period of service.
“We can ask much of our armed forces, and sometimes that can involve events that last in the body and mind for many years afterwards. While I hope that none of you ever need it, I ask that you — and those who care for all ex-service people — remember that it is available.
“It is no less than you deserve for your service.”
Stalls included military displays and Nottingham-shire Fire and Rescue.
Among the of military associations attending the event were Royal British Legion, Royal Air Forces Association, Newark 1260 Squadron Air Cadets, Army cadets, Sea cadets and the RHR Corps of Drums.
Alongside it was a craft and artisan market and live music from Rock Choir and big-band vocalist Jayne Darling.
