Plaques of remembrance were laid at Newark Parish Church and the Memorial to the Fallen in Newark Cemetery today, in memory of those who died in the D-Day landings 65 years ago.

Around 12 members of the Newark branch of the Parachute Regimental Association took part. At both services, the Last Post and Reville was sounded and an Act of Homage read.

One member of the Newark branch, Mr Dan Smith (22) who is a serving soldier with the 3rd battalion parachute regiment, was dropped into Normandy to take part in the D-Day events on Saturday.

It was the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings on Saturday, when around 130,000 allied troops took part in the 1944 landings in Normandy.

The chairman of the Newark branch, Mr Peter Allen, said it was important to remember both the people who died and those that returned. He said: "Those that did return, did so with horrible memories. One was my brother and he never spoke a word about it.

"We think it is extremely important to commemorate this day."

The branch has been together for around seven years and has 42 members. Some members were in Arnhem and others in Normandy on Saturday to mark the day.
