Dispersal powers renewed

AN ORDER that allows police to disperse groups and puts a curfew on children under 16 has been renewed in Ollerton and Boughton.

The first dispersal order ran out on May 29, but has been extended for six months.

It gives police the power to disperse groups of two or more people in public places when they believe their actions have, or may lead to, the public being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed.

Failure to comply can lead to arrest.

Also, anyone under 16 in a public place between 9pm-6am can be taken home.

The beat manager for Ollerton and Boughton, Pc Colin Oakley, said it was renewed because it was felt that crime and disorder in the area was still high.

He felt the order had a positive effect and people felt safer and happier with it.

He said: “People have said they have noticed a decrease in the number young people gathering at certain locations.”

The order will be reviewed in six months.
