Newark and Sherwood District Council is sprucing up the streets of Newark town centre all day today.
A council-led day of action is seeing Newark town centre get a spring clean today (Tuesday).
Newark and Sherwood District Council is running a major programme of works to spruce up the streets of Newark town centre all day today, with graffiti removal, deep street cleansing, litter picking, foliage trimming, weeding, flower planting, repainting street furniture and better signs in the town.
You'll be able to see litter-picking taking place around the town centre and around Pelham Street, Millgate, Newark Castle and the riverside areas, as well the removal of fly-posting. Murals have also been painted on empty shops to make them look more attractive.
Staff from the council’s waste management, public protection and grounds maintenance teams are working with officers and cadets from Newark Police throughout the day, to tackle a range of environmental issues and help provide a boost to the local economy through increased tourism.
The removal of illegal graffiti is high on the day’s agenda, and a specialist team is out clearing graffiti that is creating eyesores around the town centre.
One-off government funding has been allocated to councils across the country as part of a nationwide scheme designed to make sure high streets look their best and thrive, amid what has been described as a challenging time for high-street retailers as online spending increases.
David Lloyd, Newark and Sherwood District Council leader, said: “I am very much looking forward to the day of action and hope we can build on the success of our Cleaner, Safer And Greener campaign.
“High streets are the centrepoint of our communities but sometimes they need a bit of a spruce up to ensure they are looking their very best.
“This additional funding is exciting news and as well as helping fund the Newark day of action, it is enabling us to purchase more clean-up equipment to support the groups and projects dedicated to reducing litter in our district, as well as organise more days of action like this for town centres in the district.”
The district council, through its Cleaner, Safer And Greener campaign has been working hard to ensure that local communities are places everyone could be proud of.
In the last year, the council has organised three days of action in different locations across the district in partnership with the police and other agencies with the aim of building a sense of pride, well-being, and a clean environment.
