A Newark doctor retired on Christmas Eve after working at the same surgery for 34 years.

Dr Alan Garrow, 62, moved from Scotland to begin working at the Fountain Medical Centre in 1977.

He said the main aspect of the job he would miss was the interaction with patients.

"The patients are lovely. I think I have had a good relationship with most of them through the years," he said.

Dr Garrow grew up in Callander in Perthshire and said his interest in medicine was sparked after starring as a patient in the BBC series, Dr Finlay's Casebook, which was sometimes filmed at his school.

He went on to study a six year course at Aberdeen University Medical School as well as an additional year in Nottingham where he trained in anaesthetics and a year in Ayr where he trained to be a GP.
