Documentary photographer Zula Rabikowska capturing stories of Newark’s Central and Eastern European communities in new project

A Polish documentary photographer has launched a new project exploring the lives of Central and Eastern European communities in Newark.

Zula Rabikowska, who has been widely recognised for her work documenting migration, identity, and belonging, wants to hear from residents living in and around the town with Central and Eastern European backgrounds.

Individuals can share their personal stories through interviews, portraits, or informal conversations.

Zula said: “I want this project to reflect the true diversity and richness of Newark’s CEE communities.

“Each person’s journey is unique, and I’m hoping to create a space where those stories can be seen, heard, and celebrated.”

The project aims to authentically capture the diverse voices of people from countries including Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and others, and seeks to shed light on the personal experiences of those who have made Newark their home.

Zula is currently welcoming participants who are willing to share their experiences and invites anyone interested to get in touch via email — on hello@zulara.co.uk — or Instagram @zula.ra.

She is also keen to collaborate with Newark-based organisations, cultural groups, and community spaces.
