Clocks go back tonight as UK switches from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
It's that time of year again when the clocks go back in the UK.
An extra hour in bed is on offer as the clocks change from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) at 2am tonight.
The clocks going back an hour signals increasingly longer nights until the shortest day on winter solstice (December 21).
The country will remain on Greenwich Mean Time until March 30 next year.
The concept of changing the clocks depending on the time of year was introduced in the UK more than a century ago to make the most of daylight through the summer by getting up earlier.
YouGov data shows that the public is divided on the necessity of the bi-annual clock adjustments.
Its latest poll shows that, while 46% of Britons think daylight saving time should be implemented, a further 42% think it should be scrapped.
