Newarker Nathan Foad's hit UKGold sitcom Newark, Newark — prime time rump or dirty daytime doner
This was supposed to be the best summer ever and look at me chip scooping.
Leslie has come of age and come out, and what has he gained from it all? Contrary to what he expected, no-one has batted an eyelid and he's had to take a job in the Newark chippy his mum manages.
The second episode of the sitcom all about life in Newark has premiered on UKGold and has featured many more recognisable locations that we all hold dear. Oscars Inn has featured inside and out, Leslie's dad Terry went shopping in Masdings for clothes to impress estranged wife Maxine at the request of his mother-in-law Pauline, who is keen to see them reconciled, and GH Porter's has been a backdrop.
Wimpy Terry took a pasting in the market place in the latest episode, a set-up from Pauline to impress Max by Terry's manliness that went badly wrong.
The scene was the most widely witnessed publicly when it was filmed because it happened on a market day.
Newark, Newark, the semi-autobiographical work by creator Nathan Foad is based upon Foad's relationship with Newark while growing up here.
His fellow Newarkers have so far given it mixed reviews while much of the national press ranks it highly.
Some have said the three-part sitcom does Newark no favours and paints the town in a bad light on the national stage, while others recognise it for what they say it is, a funny portrayal of life on the town's council estates with gritty and daft characters you just might run into in any one of a number of town pubs or a magistrates' court list.
What's definitely true is that Newark's local dialect continues to get an airing from some very chavvy folk.
Maybe we'll get our own urban dictionary yet.
Newark, Newark has one episode still to run.
