Southwell woman completes 15 mile fundraising walk after double hip replacement for three Nottinghamshire hospitals who cared for her and her family

A year after a double hip replacement, a woman and her family have undertaken a 15-mile fundraising walk for three NHS hospitals.

Jane Gamble, 72, of Southwell, completed the walk on Saturday, August 3, and has so far raised over £2,400 for the teams at Nottingham City Hospital, Kings Mill Hospital and Hopewood CAMHS who she says have provided “terrific” support to her, her husband, and her granddaughter over the past few years.

The Kings Mill clinic seven prostate cancer diagnostic team and the oncology team at City Hospital cared for and supported Jane’s husband Malcolm Gamble when he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer after a routine blood test in December 2023, while the Hopewood team helped her granddaughter Amie through her Autism diagnosis and ‘heart-breaking’ mental health issues, allowing her to now “look forward with hope”.

Jane herself had a double hip replacement on August 9 last year for her arthritic hips, at City Hospital, where she was the first bilateral hip replacement patient by the direct anterior method performed by consultant Mr Mark Higgins.

In a bid to give back more than a simple “thank you”, she came up with the idea of the fundraising walk and aimed to raise a total of £2,100 — which she has well surpassed — to be split between Nottinghamshire Healthcare Charity, Sherwood Forest Hospitals Charity, and Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

Donations can still be made to Jane’s fundraising page at: www.gofundme.com/f/three-cheers-when-thank-you-just-isnt-enough.

Jane said: “We had a fantastic day on our 15-mile walk, enjoying perfect weather and beautiful scenery. Most importantly, we raised significant funds for our three local NHS charities.

“Our whole family got involved, and their encouragement and support made the day truly special. We're thrilled with the outcome and hope to raise even more with the Go Fund Me page staying open a bit longer.”

The walk began at Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, where the family had a send off from some of the nurses, and went on to Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s CAMHS unit, Hopewood, and ended at Nottingham City Hospital.

The entire trek took four hours and 50 minutes, despite a brief time spent lost in Bestwood park, and Jane was accompanied by her family and dogs along the way.

Paul Devlin, chairman of Nottinghamshire Healthcare said: "We are incredibly grateful to Jane and her family for their dedication and hard work during their 15-mile fundraising walk. Their efforts and the funds raised will make a significant difference in supporting our NHS services. It is heartening to see such community spirit and support for our cause."
