Edingley Lodge Care Home residents celebrates 100th birthday
Over 50 bikers have helped a care home resident celebrate their 100th birthday in style.
Roy Springg, a resident at Edingley Lodge Care Home, marked his centenary birthday on September 28 at the care home.
He saw relatives travelling from around the world to the care home — some who he hadn’t seen in over a decade — to reminisce and catch up.
Growing up, Roy always loved motorbikes, and it has continued to be throughout his life.
Laura Goodman, a senior carer and Phoebe Hind, the activities coordinator, put out a community request for a few bikers to join them and wish Roy a happy birthday, resulting in over 50 bikers on the day.
The morning was filled with the sights and sounds Roy had loved all his life, gleaming bikes of every kind and, even more importantly, kind-hearted people who gave their time to make his day unforgettable.
Strangers came with thoughtful birthday cards, meaningful gifts, and even a hand-drawn card for the birthday boy.
One of the kind bikers gave Roy the chance to rev the engine of his bike, just like he used to.
The daughter of another resident at Edingley Lodge care home said: “Roy’s 100th birthday was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“The motorbikes, the family and the community all came together to make it so special. Here’s to many more memories.”
Staff at Edingley Lodge, Roy’s Family and the kind strangers who took their time to visit Roy all stood together to sing Happy Birthday, and the joy on his face said it all.
Roy, the birthday boy, said: “I am at a loss for words, but I am beyond happy. Seeing all these bikes brings back lots of happy memories for me.”
The care home’s chef, Marta Fitzerman, was said to have made an ‘incredible’ birthday cake.
