Dragon misses out on parade
A St George’s Day celebration will not include a dragon parade this year, but organisers are still hoping for an exciting day of events.
A member of the St George’s Day Celebration Group, Mr Norman Barrows, said enough money could not be secured this time for a parade or a dragon.
Last year a 30ft papier mache dragon led the parade before being burned on the parish field.
Organisers will also be more reliant on volunteer help for the pageant in Ollerton village.
Mr Barrows said people were still working very hard behind the scenes to make the day as exciting as possible.
He said this year’s theme would be medieval.
He hoped those taking part would dress in medieval costumes, and there would be a cash prize for the best-dressed stall.
A volunteer will dress up as St George and a Sherwood Forest community ranger, Amy Chandler, will be working with school children on several projects.
There will be the usual attractions such as archery, the Sherwood Forest Rotary Club’s duck race on the River Maun, and the Dukeries Community Band.
Mr Barrows said a group meeting would be held on Wednesday to discuss the event.
