Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attend a water rescue assisted by its new drone

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service (NFRS) attended a report of a car that had been completely submerged in the River Trent, Gunthorpe at around 9:30am today (January 22).

Firefighters from Newark and Bingham attended with ambulance crews and police officers to assist with the water rescue, where the driver had self-rescued on arrival and was taken to hospital.

The drone team was deployed alongside the fire service boat team and swift water rescue technicians.

The drone provided the Incident Commander with a clearer picture at the scene and allowed the Service to work with partners, to make more detailed decisions to resolve the incident.

Station Manager Christian Brown said: “Thanks to the thermal imaging capabilities of the drone this resulted in an in-depth search to be carried out.

“This is the first time the Service have used the drone since we launched at the start of January and it is already proving to help keep both communities and firefighters safer."

The joint drone is the latest in a range of collaboration projects between us and our emergency service partners; other successful joint initiatives include a shared welfare vehicle for firefighters and police officers to use at incidents, joint school's education and road safety initiatives.
