Christmas has come early for residents of Beaumont Walk, Newark

It may be only mid-November, but the festive adverts are on television because the nation needs something to look forward to. And, for the residents of one Newark street, Christmas has come early.

People on Beaumont Walk on Newark’s Yorke Drive estate were feeling more than a little down and, just as they did for Victory in Europe Day, in the last lockdown, they weren’t prepared to sit idly by so, they pooled their money and their resources.

Town and district councillor Gill Dawn, who lives on Beaumont Walk, said: “We have put our lights up.

“They are all over along the walk. I can’t decide if it looks like Christmas or the main strip in Benidorm but it’s sure put a smile on everybody’s faces.

“We did something similar when all the VE Day celebrations had to be cancelled — up went the bunting, out came the costumes and we had a little socially-distanced street party.

“This time we have an old chap who dresses up as Santa.

“People bring their children from elsewhere on the estate just to have a look.

“It’s mainly older people down here so nobody gets out much.

“Everybody was feeling really depressed and fed-up. It has brought a smile back to people’s faces.”
