His experiences as a prisoner of war and subsequent escape from a forced march seem more like the basis for a Hollywood film script rather than the wartime memories of a modest man from the heart of Newark.

It's all there in his book, I Only Wanted To Fly.

Sadly, it is five years after Mr Smyth’s death that the book has made it into print.

While that may be cause for some regret, those close to the project, who were determined to see his work published, say he would have been very proud.

Mr Smyth’s story is one that deserves to be read by the widest possible audience.

The Newark Pubwatch scheme is aiming to recruit new members in the run-up to Christmas.

Under the scheme landlords help each other keep incidents in licensed premises to a minimum by issuing warnings about possible troublemakers.

It’s only a tiny minority who seek to settle their differences through violence but their actions can ruin a good night out for whoever else is inadvertently caught up in their thuggery.

If joining Pubwatch can have a hand in keeping these sort of incidents to an absolute minimum all landlords should give it some serious consideration.
