Here are the Advertiser's exclusive pictures from inside the metal barriers put up to secure the site where four age-old trees are due to be felled to make way for a carpark.

Newark and Sherwood District Council arrived early yesterday (Thursday) to secure the site and prevent protesters interfering with its planned works.

Council officers were supported by the police and campaigners served with legal notices saying they would be liable to arrest if they did not vacate the land.

Dozens of protesters adhered to this notice but a handful remained behind in defiance, in what was a good-natured action.
