Southwell speedwatch group fears speeding in town ‘getting worse not better’

More than 250 incidents of motorists breaking speed limits have been recorded by a community speedwatch group.

Over the course of 20 patrols carried out over eight locations in Southwell by it’s community speedwatch group, 258 offenders were recorded at speeds over 33mph in 30mph limited areas.

The group currently has six volunteers, and is keen to welcome more. Anyone interested should contact the town council’s clerk via admin@southwell-tc.gov.uk.

Speaking at the Southwell safer neighbourhood group meeting on Thursday, September 12, Paul Mackintosh, of the speedwatch group, said: “We continue to do our best, with limited person power, to carry out patrols in town.

“We operate eight sites, and have patrolled 21 times so far this year, for a total of 19 hours.”

The group has a further 13 patrols planned for the remainder of the year.

Data collected so far indicates an “ongoing problem” with speeding — which the group suggests is getting worse not better.

Throughout the entirety of 2023, over 36 sessions, 387 incidents of speeding over 33mph were recorded.

Areas of concern include Newark Road, Nottingham Road and Fiskerton Road.

The group also called for the police’s radar van to be deployed in the town to assist in catching speeding drivers, as well as raising concerns about increased traffic and subsequently pollution in the town centre.
