Felled tree put to community use

A tree brought down during high winds is to be turned into furniture.

The large oak tree fell on allotments on Mansfield Road, Edingley.

Mr Ed Compton, Edingley All–otments supervisor, said after some initial disagreement about who owned the tree, the parish council agreed to take responsibility.

It was decided that rather than chopping up the 200-year-old tree for firewood it would be turned into planks for a community noticeboard and furniture for the church and village hall.

Mr Compton said: “It is seriously good timber and it would be a crying shame to see a tree that took 200 years to grow turned to firewood.”

He said the tree was nearly lost when men with chainsaws attempted to begin to take it away.

The men later returned and the police were called to warn them off.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed they attended and spoke to everyone involved before the issue was resolved between the parties.
