Festival joy

This week is both a joy and a disappointment.

There is joy because the Newark Jazz Festival is returning in May (Jazz Is Back In Town, Advertiser, January 15).

Peter Duncan and Paul Sparks are to be congratulated for their determination to revive the festival and their bravery in introducing the Stroller ticket concept.

The festival has proven good for the town and good for businesses.

The Stroller ticket idea will certainly not put me off paying a modest amount to help keep everything alive.

My disappointment is with Reel Cinema in Newark.

Has anybody else noticed that they seem to show films that do not appear to be appealing?

The leading films this week are Book Of Eli, All About Steve and It’s Complicated.

The first two were given ‘Turkeys’ in a national newspaper. It’s Complicated was given only two stars in Empire magazine. And as for Alvin And The Chipmunks, well, I ask you.

Up In The Air (five stars) is in cinemas but not in Newark.

To get any films that are anywhere near interesting I have to go to Nottingham or Lincoln.
