Fifteen-year-old flautist wins Southwell Choral Society John and Peggy Oldham Bursary, and The David McIntosh Award
A teen musician has won two musical bursaries, and is set to join a choral society for their summer concert.
Flautist Kitty Haworth, 15, of Southwell, has been named as this years winner of both the Southwell Choral Society John and Peggy Oldham Bursary, and The David McIntosh Award.
Kitty will be presented with her certificate and award of £1,200 on July 12, at at the next concert given by Southwell Choral Society in Southwell Minster.
The young musician said: “I am very grateful for the opportunities this bursary will give me.
“I will be able to prepare for and take my diploma flute exam and attend a flute festival at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in workshops with professional flautists.”
In line with its charitable status, the Choral Society offers the annual awards to help further the musical careers of young people living in and around Southwell.
Kitty will also join the members of the Choral Society in their Summer Serenade concert, conducted by Marcus Farnsworth — which will be the culmination of their sixtieth season.
The concert will feature a recent composition by society president Bob Chilcott, one of the UK’s leading composers and conductors.
His work, Songs My Heart Has Taught Me, is a four-movement work exploring the themes of inclusivity, identity and unity, with words by Delphine Chalmers.
By popular demand, the concert will also include performances of Eric Whitacre’s Seal Lullaby and Guy Turner’s arrangement of Over The Rainbow.
Tickets are available from members or from the Cathedral Shop.
