Southwell Town Council's Peter Harris joins volunteers to paint King Street bollards for first time in 25 years

Street furniture received a makeover for the first time in more than 25 years as part of a project to rejuvenate the town centre.

Mr Peter Harris and volunteers led the project as they painted the street bollards and put up hanging baskets on King Street, Southwell.

Mr Harris said Southwell Town Council had decided to upgrade bollards almost two years ago, but were waiting for a suitable time to spend the money.

He said it made economical sense to get the work done sooner rather than later.

“A number of years ago the council decided that the street bollards should be painted dark green, and it has been very difficult with the lack of staff to do that work, so the volunteers have started to take some of the work on,” said Mr Harris.

“The flag poles went up on Friday and now we are starting to see the rewards of how much work and effort is going into making the town a nice place to be.

“The bollards around the market square had not been painted for more than 25 years and they were in very poor condition.

“The paint was peeling and it was essential that it was done.”

Mr Harris said the feedback both before and after was positive.

“We have had a lot of very positive comments,” he said.

“A few have said they do not like the colour and that they would have preferred the bollards to be painted black.”

The work followed the introduction of a new one-way system in the town centre.
