Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newark Fire Station conduct frozen water exercise

As the UK continues to see freezing temperatures fire crews have been practicing ice and cold water rescue exercises.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue crews from Newark Fire Station made the most of the cold weather and carried out the training on a frozen pond in Middlebeck.

Specialist rescue equipment, including inflatable path-ways were used to enable them to reach a person (dummy) in distress, and return them to safety.

The exercises came in the wake of the tragic national news that four young boys had died after falling through ice into a frozen lake near Birmingham.

Newark Fire Station posted the update to their social media pages and offered a warning, saying:

"In light of recent national events, we took the opportunity to conduct realistic training on the frozen pond at Middlebeck.

"It is really important that you educate children of the dangers of playing on frozen water."
