Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters from Newark and Retford to run four miles, every four hours, for 48 hours to raise money for Fire Fighters Charity

A group of firefighters are preparing to take on an exhausting endurance challenge which will put their fitness to the test in the name of a good cause.

Crew manager Andrew Snell, and firefighters Keil Fraser and Jack Roland from Newark Fire Station, as well as Mike Douglas from Retford Fire Station, are aiming to complete the 4x4x48 Challenge in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

The challenge was created by ex U.S Navy SEAL David Goggins, and requires each person to run four miles, every four hours, over a 48 hour period.

This means each runner will complete 12 four mile runs, for a total of 48 miles.

The team will set off at 5pm on Friday (June 13) and over the following two days the four men will test themselves physically and mentally as they battle the miles and a lack of sleep.

To make things even harder, the team are aiming to run 10 minute miles, meaning each of the runs will have to be completed in 40 minutes, no matter how tired they get.

Andrew Snell said: “It’s something quite different from what people might normally do to raise money for charity.

“It’s not a marathon, and we’re not hiking the Three Peaks. It’s going to be really physical and mentally tough as we’re deprived of sleep.

“So it’s going to be tough, but we’ve got a good group, we all run anyway, and are looking forward to the challenge.”

They have set a target of raising £1,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity, and are well on their way to achieve that goal after surpassing £600 already.

The Fire Fighters Charity provides care and support to members of the fire service and their families, with a focus on helping them to overcome mental and physical challenges, social wellbeing, and to and ease the transition to life after service.

Most of the runs will be completed on the roads in and around Newark, but the team will also be taking part in this weekend’s Newark Parkrun at Sconce and Devon Park, while the YMCA have offered the use of their running track for part of the challenge.
