Firework display at Christmas lights switch-on event approved by Newark Town Council

A firework display at this year’s Christmas lights switch-on event has been approved by a council.

There was debate as to whether the display should happen this year due to the concerns surrounding anti-social behaviour, fears for the environment and the cost.

However, the display was approved by a majority at a Newark Town Council meeting.

It is set to take place on Sunday, November 26 at the Christmas light switch-on event in the Market Place.

Last year’s fireworks received a lot of criticism as NCP Carparks withdrew their venue as a launch location with short notice and the Castle Grounds were the only viable alternative.

Some members of the public complained that they were unable to view the show.

NCP Carparks has been approached again and other potential launching locations have been secured but not yet tested.

Town councillor Mathew Skinner said: “I am really passionate about fireworks for two reasons, as I have before mentioned, my young children enjoy it and I have always enjoyed it when I was a youngster, but more important is the footfall in town on that day is so important to a number of charities that stand on the stalls all day raising significant amounts of money, some even for the year.

“It is crucial that the footfall is maintained and supported in a safer way I accept, but if you start to shrink the event in any shape or form, you are putting significant pressure on third-party organisations.”

This year’s fireworks display finale for Newark Festival didn’t go ahead after technicians and security staff were threatened and attacked by youths.

Councillors Glenis Rix and Lynn Roulstone shared their concerns about the environmental impact that fireworks would have on the town and its wildlife, as well as the cost of the display.

Lynn Roulstone said: “I would much rather be spending the money on making the event as amazing as possible with extra people coming here.

“It would be great thinking about all the lighting shows you could do, which could be more environmentally friendly and reusable.

“I love fireworks but I think their time has passed.”

The display was approved yet it is subject to safety considerations, and consultations with relevant experts and people affected.
