Fitting memorial
The chairman of Balderton Parish Council, Mrs Angela Jarvis, wrote to the Advertiser in September following a presentation by Mr John Stephenson to Halam Parish Council of pictures, mounted and framed, of the graves of a Lancaster crew who died when their aircraft was destroyed a few miles from Halam.
I feel privileged that I was invited to the presentation.
I’m sure Mr Stephenson and members of Halam Parish Council were very proud that as a result of their efforts to have a memorial to the crew who lost their lives in 1943, the son of one of the crew members attended a memorial service there on November 11.
I know Mr Stephenson has received some publicity regarding his appeals to send welfare boxes to Services personnel in Afghanistan.
I have seen a number of letters from senior officers applauding his efforts, and he certainly deserves support in this enterprise.
