Flood alerts remain in place along the River Trent at Cromwell Weir and River Witham between Claypole and South Witham following heavy rain brought by Storm Bert

Flood alerts remain in place in the Newark and surrounding areas following heavy rain brought by Storm Bert.

There are currently two flood alerts in place along the River Trent — one from Cromwell Weir to Gainsborough including The Flood Road, A156, Dunham Road and Gainsborough Road, and another from Castle Donington to Cromwell Weir.

River levels are slowly rising at the Shardlow and at the Torksey river gauges as a result of heavy rainfall.

Consequently, flooding of low-lying roads and farmland is possible. Areas most at risk are low-lying agricultural land and roads including communities near to the River Trent, and cellars of low-lying properties.

Another flood alert is also in place on the River Witham and its tributaries from Claypole to Lincoln, and from South Witham to Claypole.

“We expect the river to remain high throughout the next few days and flooding to gardens, driveways or outhouses is possible close to the river,” an Environment Agency spokesman said.

“Our forecasts indicate that flooding inside properties is not likely and therefore flood warnings are not expected to be issued.

“We are constantly monitoring river levels and have staff in the field checking for blockages and clearing weedscreens. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

Further updates will be provided later this afternoon.
