One included a mattress, bedding and a sofa dumped by the river at Fiskerton while the other was a fridge freezer and bags of compost tipped on Southwell Road, Bleasby.

They said: “If the fridge came out of someone’s house, they have got health issues because that’s on another level.

“Scientists should take a look, as they might find something to kill the covid-19.”

Roger Jackson, chairman of leisure and environment at the district council, said: “Since the beginning of March and the initial impact of the covid-19 restrictions, fly-tipping within Newark and Sherwood has increased 61% by weight.

“We would ask residents to be vigilant and report anybody dumping rubbish illegally and in that way they are supporting our waste teams and helping to keep services running efficiently and effectively.

“We are hoping the county council’s recycling centres will be open as soon as possible.”
