Footballing past remembered




On visiting my mother in Balderton to deliver food in lockdown, I read her old Advertisers and noticed the death of Alvin Cooling.

I came across Alvin many times playing football, at school and later in the Newark leagues, and never got the better of him.

There were lots of good footballers in Newark in the late Fifties and Sixties ­— William 'Billy' Cobb who played for Forest, David Williams, a Magnus pupil (a rugby school) who played semi-pro for Rotherham, goalkeepers Cos Goddard and Den Judson, and defender Mel Prosser ­— and many more who played all day long on Sconce park.
