Former Newark Golf Club captain meets golden retriever he named after raising thousands for Guide Dogs for the Blind
A former Newark Golf Club captain has met the dog, which he named after raising £5,340.06 for charity.
David Yarnell was captain in 2017 and chose the Guide Dogs for the Blind as his charity.
“In my job I work with electrics and installations,” he said.
“One day we had a blind person come in and talk about the difficulties they encounter and it made me think about things.
“So when the opportunity came to pick a charity I decided to choose one which supports the blind and we have a dog of our own so that made sense.”
David raised money at the golf club through open days, competitions and a halfway house, where his wife Linda would sell snacks and soft drinks.
David needed to raise £2,500 to name a dog and the more he raised the more benefits he gets from it.
He called the dog Bob. He said: “It was a tribute to Linda’s father who died two years ago. “
Bob, who is now six months old, visited the golf club giving David a chance to meet the golden retriever he had named and followed.
“Meeting Bob was just fantastic,” he said.
“Bob was just great. He was bouncing around but was very well behaved. My grandchildren loved playing with him.
“It was nice to meet him.”
David will receive updates every three months on Bob until he completes his training.
The money he raised goes to the charity, which trains the dogs up before finding them owners who are blind or partially-sighted.
David said: “ I am quite proud of the fundraising and it’s nice to see what it has gone towards.”
