A forum set up by Southwell Town Council as a way for residents to express opinions about the town is proving successful, according to its chairman.

The chairman of Southwell Town Forum, Mr Peter Harris, said the forum allowed residents to comment without attending more formal town council meetings.

The town forum takes place every two months.

Those attending sit around a table and everyone is free to make comments, unlike at town council meetings where standing orders are in place that forbid the public from addressing the meeting unless given permission by the council.

Speaking at a meeting of Southwell Town Council, Mr Harris said the forum was looking at ways to improve and had created a terms of reference.

He said: “We wish to continue to expand the membership of the forum so that residents can bring matters of concern for review by the forum.

“We propose to do this specifically by having a pre-agenda agenda sent out to forum members and interested residents before each meeting then if they have items they wish to raise we can put them on the agenda for the meeting.

“We will continue to be a forum to which every resident and organisation in the town is invited and it will have a wide agenda.”

Mrs Beryl Prentice thought it was important that it was specifically mentioned in the terms of reference that pupils from The Minster School, Southwell, were invited to attend the meetings.

The school sends representatives to the forum.

Mr Peter Pay thought all youth organisations in the town should be invited to send representatives.

He said: “I hope the agenda will go to them so they can raise any issues and it should also go to any major voluntary organisations.”

Mr Andy Gregory said he was excited about the way the forum was progressing.
