Newark Advertiser reader letters: Free parking must pay off
Recently, I took advantage of the free weekend parking in Newark town centre — as did many others judging by how full the carparks were.
I arrived in town quite early and managed to get one of the last parking spaces in London Road carpark.
I met a friend for a leisurely breakfast and drinks in a local (non national-chain) coffee shop. Then I had a wonder round the Market Place and shops.
Because I am usually limited by time — either free parking at one of the town supermarkets or the parking machines — it was a rare opportunity to have a look in some of the shops I wouldn’t usually go in.
Despite all the critics, Newark has some beautiful shops and I managed to pick up a few Christmas presents — and a treat or two for me.
After a lunch in another cafe, I picked up a few bits from the market before heading home — having spent substantially more than I usually would in Newark.
Explain to me again why permanent free parking in the town centre wouldn’t help the town. — R. Miller, via email.
