Friends from Kneesall Primary School turn their fitness challenge into fundraiser for Newark's Beaumond House Community Hospice

School friends who set themselves a summer fitness goal are raising money for charity at the same time.

The youngsters, who attend Kneesall Primary School, are tackling a sponsored walk from the village to Weston, six miles away.

Ruby Doyle, 7, of Kneesall, and friends, siblings Devon, 8 and Isla Henson, 6, of Ollerton, will be making the journey with their mums, Paula Doyle and Luan Henson, and others.

They have been getting up to speed during the summer holidays, and will make the walk tomorrow.

Calling themselves The Young And The Breathless, the team will set off from The Hay Barn at 9.30am and will follow a safe, off-road route taking in Laxton, Moorhouse and Egmanton, hoping to finish at The Bird’s Nest coffee lounge in Weston at about 12.30pm.

The team is raising money for Beaumond House Community Hospice, and has set a target of £500.

The walkers have an online fundraising page, on which they say: “The children wanted to get spend their summer holidays working towards this fitness goal while raising some money for a worthy cause.

“We chose Beaumond House as it is a charity that is very close to our hearts and does some amazing work in our local community.”

The hospice has faced a drop in income because of the coronovirus pandemic, and fundraising officer Kat Wright House said: “We will need more people to set up fundraisers just like this while we are so limited in how we can fundraise.”
