Newark and Sherwood District Council officers played a football match against Syrian team Adel's Heroes at the YMCA Activity Village

Friendships were forged as Syrian refugees and council officers came together to celebrate and embrace different cultures over 60 minutes of football.

Adel’s Heroes, named and led by Syrian interpreter Adel Hamad, lost 6-3 to staff from Newark and Sherwood District Council at the YMCA Activity Village, but in the end, the score became irrelevant as smiles and good-natured banter became the main attraction.

The council’s chief executive John Robinson, who was loaned to the refugees’ team for the night, said: “It was fantastic to be part of such an occasion where friendship and hospitality were the true winners.
