Frustration over stalled clean-up
Residents living opposite a derelict building site are still waiting for it to be cleared — six months after calling for action.
Those living near the site on Mallow Way, Bingham, claim it is an eyesore and is continuing to fall into disrepair.
After contacting the landowners, Miller Homes, in November, some repairs were made. The company also offered to meet residents if they were still not satisfied.
But Mr Robin Aldworth, 74, of Mallow Way, said the offer to ensure residents were satisfied was never followed up.
He said: “We have heard nothing and since then a large number of additional containers have appeared at the rear of the site.
“It seems Miller Homes are using the area as a general dump for unwanted equipment.
“The wind continues to displace fence panels and rip the sheeting.
“Site inspections seldom take place as the damage remains unrepaired for weeks and months.”
The company was planning to put a housing development on the plot but work stopped as the recession hit. Part of the site will eventually be used for green space.
Another resident, Mrs Margaret Hill, 46, understood why Miller Homes could not continue building until other houses had sold, but said the company should maintain the land.
She said: “My house cost £270,000 when I bought it six years ago and it is worth exactly the same today.
“I really don’t want to move but I have considered it because of the way the site looks.
“Their initial improvement was a half-attempt as they just put some sheeting up, which didn’t really cover anything.
“I want them to remove the storage units and generally tidy the site.
“I have written at least three times and phoned another six times. I got so fed up in the end, I gave up. They just don’t seem to care about the people in the residential area.”
When asked by the Advertiser if there were any plans to clear the site, a spokesman for Miller Homes East Midlands said: “The new housing market is seeing signs of improvement following the recent recession and as such work is again progressing on the developments on Mallow Way, Bingham.
“The green public open space areas will be completed and handed over to the public when safe to do so as the new phases of work nears completion.”
