A garden centre has raised more than £1,500 for charity.

Dan O’Neill, the owner of Southwell Garden Centre, Fiskerton Road, spearheaded a fundraising campaign that raised £1,700 for Beaumond House Community Hospice, Newark.

The charity provides palliative care in and around Newark and is the latest beneficiary of the garden centre’s charity work.

“We have done charity work and made donations before, but it was always to a large nationwide charity,” Dan said.

“Everybody has links, or at least knows somebody who has links to a smaller and more local charity, and that’s why we went with them.

“The idea came from contact with customers.

“A lady and a gentleman, who regularly visit the shop, came in, and from there we just started talking.

“We got on to the topic of charity and it stemmed from there.”

A large part of the money was generated from the shop’s Santa’s Grotto and other festive activities, which included raffles and evening events, while the rest of the money was built up over the year.

“We had a very big raffle around Christmas time and most of the prizes were donated by the customers,” Dan said.

“There was free delivery on Christmas trees, but customers were invited to donate to the Beaumond House collection.

“It was a great team effort, I must say.

“I want to say thank you to all the staff, and the customers too.”
