Reader's letter: Future in doubt
Regarding the campaign to save the trees in London Road carpark, which Newark and Sherwood Council is so keen to destroy, I can’t stop thinking about the comment by planning committee chairman Roger Blaney.
He reportedly said replac-ing trees with extra car spaces would “future-proof” the carpark.
Surely destroying these trees will do the opposite.
Fewer young people are learning to drive or wanting to own cars. Public transport is being given additional investment. COP 26 had world leaders desperate to cut pollution, promote re-forestation and limit global warming.
The council, on the other hand, sees a future of increasing car use and is ready to trample on the wishes of the public, who want to protect the environment and save one small corner of greenery as part of doing their bit for posterity.
The council is on the wrong side of history. — G. KEAL, Balderton.
