The garden at Burgage Close, Southwell, was named best communal garden in a competition run by Newark and Sherwood Homes.

Residents at the complex of 24 flats will be presented with a certificate today.

They took over responsibility of the maintenance of the garden from the district council two years ago.

Residents Mr Ray Foster and Mr Les Sills tend the area, which features colourful flower beds, five small trees, pathways and benches.

Mr Foster (78) said: “It is nice to know that all the hard work has not gone unnoticed.

“At the end of the day this is our home and we all want it to look as nice as possible.”

Another resident, Mr Ray Pearson, said: “We have an excellent community spirit here and winning this award will really help to maintain that.

“Everyone is very grateful to the two gardeners who have made this garden such a pleasant place to sit in.”

Mrs Peggy Brooks (81) filled in the forms for the competition, which was open to tenants and leaseholders with Newark and Sherwood Homes.

She said: “I just thought we have a lovely little space here and it was worth a shot, and now I’m glad I did.”
