GCSEs 2024: Magnus Church of England Academy, Newark, pupils’ hard work pays off with exam success
With many pupils achieving top grades, an academy is celebrating its GCSE success.
Magnus Church of England Academy, Newark, saw 64% of pupils achieve a grade 4 or higher in English, with similarly strong results seen in Maths.
Magnus also reported outstanding individual performances, where pupils have achieved grades 7,8,and 9 across the board.
Many of the pupils will now be continuing their education at the school’s sixth form, or heading off to college elsewhere.
Riley Payne, who was particularly pleased with his level two distinction* in enterprise, said: “Overall it’s gone quite well, I’m incredibly happy with my business result. I wasn’t expecting to get what I did.
“It’s looking good moving forward.”
He achieved a 7 in English language, 6 in English literature, level two distinction* in enterprise, a 6 in geography, 6 in maths, 7 in religious studies, 7,7 in double science, and a 7 in technology.
Riley plans to attend Magnus sixth form, where he will study business, maths, physics and geography, before going on to university or joining the RAF.
“I’ll see where life takes me,” he added.
Arnas Jurgelevicius achieved a 7 in English language, 9 in English literature, 5 in French, 9 in history, level two merit in hospitality and catering, 6 in maths, 9 in religious studies and 7,6 in double science.
He said: “I’m feeling good. I’m very happy with my 9 in history.
“I came out of the exam feeling like my answers to some of the questions weren’t grade 9 answers, so I kind of went in with ‘I’ll take what I can get’.”
Arnas will also stay on at sixth form at the school, to study history, criminology, biology and religious studies.
Otis Summerfield also plans to stay on at sixth form, and was feeling good about his results.
“I got a pass in everything I needed to pass,” he said, and was particularly pleased with his grade in maths.
“Hopefully I’ll be going to sixth form, and then just moving on from there.”
He achieved a 5 in English language, 5 in English literature, 6 in geography, 6 in history, 7 in maths, 6,6 in double science, and a 6 in technology.
Aspiring pharmacist Malwina Powroznik is also set for sixth form, where she will study chemistry, biology, maths and sociology.
She took GCSE options of geography, history, religious studies and sociology, and was feeling “very nice” about her results — especially her 7 in maths.
“I didn’t feel I would get this high of a grade — for me its high,” she added.
Her results were a 7 in English language, 6 in English literature, 5 geography, 8 in history, 7 in maths, 9 in Polish, 8 in religious studies, 8,7 in double science, and 6 in sociology.
Sophie Munroe was relived to have got her results, and was feeling good about her grades.
She plans to stay on a Magnus to study A-levels in criminology, sociology and English.
Sophie achieved a 7 in English language, 5 in English literature, 5 in geography, level two distinction in hospitality and catering, 6 in maths, 5 in religious studies, 6,5 in double science, and 5 in sociology.
Heading of to Lincoln College to study English language, history and phsycology is Seren Saint.
Seren said: “I’m actually really happy, I was shocked at my results.”
She achieved a level two merit in drama, 9 in English language, 7 in English literature, 7 in history, 6 in maths, 7 in religious studies, 6,6 in double science, and a 5 in Spanish.
Nicholas Smith was also “very pleased” with his results, specifically his 9 in maths and 8 in further maths.
He said: “I’m really proud.”
Nicholas will be continuing his eduction at Magnus, to do A-levels in chemistry, maths, further maths, and design and techology.
His grades were a 6 in art, 6 in English language, 5 in English literature, 9 in maths, 8 in further maths, 6 in geography, 6 in religious studies, 8,7 in double science, and 7 in techology.
Also celebrating some great results was Jasmine Adams, who achieved an 8 in English language, 8 in English literature, 6 in history, 5 in religious studies, 4 in science, 5 in sociology, and a 5 in Spanish.
Principal at Magnus C of E Academy, Anna Martin, said: “A huge well done to our students, who despite suffering significant disruption to their learning during the first few years because of the pandemic, have worked so hard to achieve strong GCSE results.
“Of note, we have seen some fantastic achievements in the tech award subjects such as, child development, hospitality and catering, and enterprise. Likewise, our language students, including those taking Spanish, Greek, and Turkish have also achieved some fabulous results.
“We are delighted to be welcoming so many of our students back into the Magnus sixth form, and we look forward to supporting them as they embark on the next exciting stage of their education.”
